Traditional Preparation:
• Bruising: Gently bruise fresh Yaupon leaves and small twigs in a mortar to release essential oils and flavors.
• Parching: Place the bruised leaves and twigs in an earthenware vessel over a fire to create a rich, toasty aroma.
• Drying: Spread parched leaves on mats to dry in the sun, preserving flavor for brewing
• Brewing: Place dried Yaupon leaves and twigs inhot water, heat and stir until frothy, and steep to desired strength. Strain before drinking.
Cold Brew Method:
• Preparation: Place in a pitcher of cold water 1 tablespoon of leaves or 1 tea bag per cup.
• Brewing: Steep in the refrigerator for 6-12 hours, then strain if needed. Serve chilled.
Coffee Substitute:
• Preparation: Boil water and add 1 tablespoon of Yaupon leaves or 2 tea bags per cup.
• Brewing: Simmer for 7-10 minutes for a robust flavor, strain before serving. Enjoy hot or iced.
